As the privacy issue gets more heated on the Internet, it appears activists and activist/programmers are employing some drastic measures to get people to start paying attention, and they’re targeting Facebook.According to a story on PRI.org,
…And,
…Privacy activists blame FB…
This morning I learned that Facebook now likes to insist that “you own all of the content and information you post.” This is their go-to defense for people decrying privacy problems.
This statement is misleading at best. The next line in their terms of service says “you grant us a non-exclusive, transferable, sub-licensable, royalty-free, worldwide license to use any IP content that you post on or in connection with Facebook (“IP License”).”
That’s not ownership. At best, it’s a shared ownership.
Hey, I think personal responsibility is great. That’s why I recycle, I vote, and I pay my taxes. But there are larger forces at play here. Facebook intentionally puts the default settings at as open as possible. Changing that won’t take away people’s right to share “what they want, with whom they want, and when they want.” But it might make them think twice about it.
